Popular Culture Booklet

Defining ‘Popular Culture’: The term was originally used to distinguish between lower class and higher class culture, but as technology and entertainment progressed throughout the twentieth century,  the meaning of the term eventually evolved into pieces of culture that were popular or mainstream.

‘Popular Culture’ Today?: Now seen to do with what people do in their leisure time, primarily defined through peoples use of music, sport, television, fashion and film and other forms of media or activities. It also defined as being linked to the economy i.e the entertainment industry. There’s also an evident clear pattern of popular culture amongst different generations.

Popular Culture in Australia: Popular Culture is seen to have influenced Australian culture and way of life, it has redefined what it means to be Australian, time and time again.

Reconstruction: What is referred to as the period after World War 2 where Australian veterans were returning from war and need to adjust to fit back into society, but was met with a lot of success and many of them led on to live happy lives. This is one one of defining moments of Australia being known as ‘the lucky country.’

Living the ‘Australian Dream’: A house in the suburbs: In the 1950s, this was though as a raising a family in a typical brick quarter-acre home on a suburban block, this was desired by returning troops. Because of this they were also offered cheaper housing in order to kick-start the building industry which had been idle during the war. Because of the baby boom there was a fast growing population and soon became a shortage of houses, as well as arriving immigrants, most lived in urban settings, however, this created a strain also on city resources.

High-Rise Housing: A cheaper alternative to suburban homes, however most who ended up living in High-Rises longed for a suburban home with Australian qualities such as backyard cricket, sunday roasts, tents etc.

Creature Comforts:

The 1950s brought the introduction of home appliances like washing machines, fridges, ovens, pressure cookers and so on into many Australian homes.  By the 1960s most homes had running hot water easy to clean kitchens. Supermarkets were overtaking corner shops with a broader range of items, this brought about with it a change that would last in Australian lifestyle.

A Nation on the move:

On Four Wheels:

The 1960s brought improved transport, such as the post-war revival of the car industry, in 1948 10 Holden cars were being made per day, by 1951 100 Holden cars were being made per day, and finally by 1962 there were 1 million Holdens on the road. At the end of the 1950s 25% of Australian families owned a car, in our current day and age 90% of Australian families own cars.

Road Trip!:

Cars also changed the way Australians and families spent their leisure time, this brought about common things we all know and love such as: trips to the beach, sporting events, road trips and camping trips. All of this was also aided with the introduction of caravans, making it possible for interstate holidays to take place.

Up, Up and Away:

Air travel had a big impact in the 50s and 60s with domestic flight companies such as Trans-Australian Airlines  and Australian National Airways allowing people to explore more of their own county. They were becoming cheaper for both holidays and business and this would contribute to the growth of a more cohesive Australian community.

A Sporting Nation:

1950s added leisure time also brought around more time for Sport, as well as sport facilities, and also sports like lawn bowls that previously, only the wealthy could afford.

Golden Era:

(Reality TV Teaser Assignment Journal) Google Docs

After having trouble with syncing up and being able to edit together on the rawscripts service, we decided to have a crack at using google docs. It runs on a simple setup where you just paste the collaborator’s gmail address into the share function and then you can edit your document live. We still plan to transfer our treatment, scripts and shotlist over to rawscripts in the end so we can take advantage of thinks such as sluglines, but for now, we believe this will do.
